These are just a few of the women who have died at the hands of the police. If you want to know their stories check out their website below:
Let me preface this with a few things. I'm a Black woman and I'm enraged with everything going on in the world. Even more so with those of you reading this who are complicit in the oppression of Black women. So if you read this and have a problem with what I'm saying, please know I don't care and 👇🏾
The past few weeks have been heavy for me as a Black woman. I attended my first protest and witnessed tear gas being thrown at protesters. I assisted in rinsing people's eyes out with milk after they were hit with the tear gas. I saw a cop approaching me with what I assume was the gun that disperses those nonlethal (yeah, ok) rubber bullets. I got chills EVERY SINGLE TIME we chanted the names of my brothers and sisters who's deaths came at the hands of police. I noticed that we chanted more names of the men who were gunned down by police than we did of the women. And that has sat with me every single day since then. Recently, a young woman by the name of Oluwatoyin Salau was murdered (allegedly) at the hands of a Black man. It enraged me even more because the very people she was fighting for at a protest recently looks just like the man who (allegedly) murdered her. Why? This news broke my heart even more. So I did what I think I do best, I picked up a pen and started writing and here's what came of it.
Untitled
I am a Black woman.
And I am tired.
We fight for our brothers and we fight for ourselves.
But who is it that fights for us unapologetically?
Just Us
Our humanity is devalued, and our bodies are abused.
We speak out.
But we are ignored, shunned, or invalidated.
We are asked: "Why didn't you go to the police?"
You mean, the same police killing my sisters and brothers?
We're asked: "Why didn't you tell someone?"
We tried, but you spoke over us and drowned out our voices.
If I can't look to my brothers to protect us and uplift us, then who can I run to?
It's my sisters.
My sisters are always by my side.
They pick me up.
They fight for me.
So I will do the same for them.
I will #SAYHERNAME loud and proud.
My sisters shouldn't have died at all. But I'll be damned if I let them die in vain by not saying their names.
I am a Black woman and will always and forever be my sister's keeper.
