(not) Home for the Holidays

Holiday - a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done

"It's the MOST WONDERFUL time of the year...". That may be true for some people, but for others not so much. I love the fall and winter holidays, but since I've become an adult, I've struggled with them. And this this year, it won't be any different.

I won't be going home for the holidays this year. I'm pretty sure this is the first Christmas since coming into this world that I won't be with my family. And I am SICK about it! Since losing family members to death, the only thing that is comforting about their absence during the holiday season is the presence of other family members that love and miss them as much as I do. And I won't be able to experience that this year.

With holidays come traditions, that include food, activities, movies, jokes, etc. I'll be missing that this year. Yes we have phones and I can call and chat with whomever, but it's not the same as being there, sitting in my granny's or aunt's lap as if I'm not a grown a* woman. Or cracking jokes on my younger cousins because they did something silly, or watching the youngest ones do that new dance. Or playing card and board games. I won't get to make the mac and cheese or taste my granny's sweet potato pie. Just writing this makes my eyes well up.

If you know me or have been reading my blog since inception, then you probably have some idea as to how tough this first semester of grad school was for me. Going home for the holidays would've been just the pick me up I needed. Even though I have been experiencing a myriad of emotions about this holiday season, I have promised to give myself room to feel any and all the emotions that come with being alone during the holidays. I promise to get some fresh air and hopefully a little sunlight. A woman's gotta eat so, I'm going to cook some of my holiday faves and try new recipes. I'm even going to brainstorm ideas for my own traditions and maybe even try them out.

To my friends who keep checking on me during this holiday season, thank you. You don't know how much it means to me that you've taken a moment to check in with me during the busy holiday season. To the family who keep asking me what I'm doing for the holidays, thanks for asking. It's a question that triggers a lot of emotions, but a reminder that you're thinking about me. To the people who are shocked that I have full intentions of spending these holidays alone, I understand your shock but it doesn't help. To the people who have sent or will send me gifts, thank you for not forgetting about me during this time.

If you are spending the holiday season alone for whatever reason, I'm right here with you. I hope your holidays are whatever you want them to be. If you have experience with spending holidays alone, please share with us in the comments how you navigate it. I hope that everyone reading this experiences joy during the holidays.

Peace & Blessings
